Guild of Machine Knitters AGM 2018

Six members attended the Guild AGM on the  8th June 2018.  We were given a display space in the foyer with two other Southern Clubs and set up the display of member’s work. This looked great and we had many compliments.

In addition, six members had worked on the Sherbourne Vase entry this year which had to be three or more cushion covers linked by a theme.

Our’s depicted scenes from the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and we were the only club who had a highly commended entry.  The winners cushions were a set of four seasonal pictures with a sheep and a tree – a nice design, the backs had some garter stitch lettering.

Overall we had a jolly time and chatted to members of other clubs and looked at the displays.

After lunch and the formal AGM section, there was a talk by Nick Traylen from Uppingham Yarns who talked about the large range of fibres now available.

Sherbourne Vase and Guild AGM 2017

Three members went to Westbury in Wiltshire for the AGM or the Guild of Machine Knitters on Saturday 18th June 2017. It was a very hot day, especially for a knitting event.
The first part of the day was a for us to look around at the various exhibitors and competition entries. There was then a talk by Marianne Henio where she showed us some of her knitwear patterns and talked about how she had started knitting.
After that, there was the AGM business and the announcement of the competition winners.
Gill, April and Anu had made a lap blanket for the Guild’s Sherbourne Vase entry which was a group project for clubs to enter. And we won!

Our Winning Entry – the reverse, not shown, was fairisle.

Congratulations to these three talented ladies, it was an excellent effort incorporating many different stitches and techniques.

The afternoon had another talk,  this time Jan Truman who knits wire sculptures gave a talk and showed some of her amazing sculptures and talked about her long association with this form of knitting, on her a specially adapted machine.

Here are two photos of the entire blanket:

A trip to Lincoln

Lyn L and I attended the recent Guild AGM in Lincoln. We were made very welcome by the local club. We arrived early having stayed overnight nearby.
There was a welcoming cuppa on arrival, we split up and went to have look around.

Around the hall were a variety of stands:

  • There were three machines up with people working and answering queries.
  • There was a stand with local students displays of experimental knitting which they were willing to talk about and they allowed pictures.
  • There were two big displays of work, one of which was from Bradford University. This also showed some experimental work and the tutor was available if you wished to talk. The second display was by a student whose work was exquisite.
  • There was a stand with small felting kits available from one of the officers.
  • Clair Crowson, Sue Booth, Alison Lee, Sally Williams, showed designs.

In a smaller adjoining hall, there was a large display of Competition entries, there was a gorgeous bear which won several prizes.
Plus, Uppingham Yarns  with some interesting fancy yarns.

After the business of the Guild AGM we all had our packed lunches and more coffee, tea and cakes.

In the afternoon we had an interesting talk by Lorna Hamilton-Brown MBE who was the guest speaker. She designs and creates art knits for numerous advertising agencies.

My thanks to the Guild Officers and the local Mapperley Machine Knitting Club, Nottingham for a very enjoyable day.\
