June 2012 Meeting

This month, Beryl Jarvis came to talk to us, she is very well known amongst the machine knitting community as an inspirational teacher, writer and speaker.

She also manages to go to have a stand at many of the machine knitting shows.

This time she gave us her slide show which covers a range of topics, we all picked us some new ideas, even the most experienced knitters. She brought along a selection of samples for us to see.

Some of the tips she gave us were to do a ribbing piece at the bottom of the tension sample so that you could estimate the number of needles required for any rib features on the garment.  Also remember to note down the weights used when creating the tension sample as they alter the tension. A garment knitted with several heavy weights will not be the correct size if the tension square was created using no weights at all.

In the second half of the evening, after coffee and cake, she gave demonstrations of several of the techniques.

Entrelac jacket
Child’s Entrelac jacket
The entrelac demonstration was very popular as many of us had seen the finished garments few has tried it for ourselves or had no idea how it was done. It was quite time consuming but created a lovely basket weave effect. Beryl had brought with her a teddy dressed in one of her entrelac baby jackets and it was a especially admired.

A holding position scalloped edge was demonstrated along with some interesting hand tooled hems.

Another unusual technique she showed is was an all in one  pocket – this is described on one of her Info sheets which are for sale at shows and directly from Beryl. It was like origami – all the pieces were knitted using hold position whilst the garment was being knitted and at the finish there was only one small seam to finish.

We all appreciated her visit and her contribution to the world of machine knitting and would like to thank her for such an interesting evening.
